Classifying Spaces for Proper Actions of Mapping Class Groups
We describe a construction of cocompact models for the classifying spaces EΓ g,r , where Γ g,r stands for the mapping class group of an oriented surface of genus g with r boundary components and s punctures. Our construction uses a cocompact model for EΓ g,0 as an input, a case which has been dealt with in [3]. We then proceed by induction on r and s.
متن کاملCocompact Proper CAT(0) Spaces
This paper is about geometric and topological properties of a proper CAT(0) spaceX which is cocompact i.e. which has a compact generating domain with respect to the full isometry group. It is shown that geodesic segments in X can “almost” be extended to geodesic rays. A basic ingredient of the proof of this geometric statement is the topological theorem that there is a top dimension d in which ...
متن کاملCriterion for proper actions on homogeneous spaces of reductive groups
Let M be a manifold, on which a real reductive Lie group G acts transitively. The action of a discrete subgroup Γ on M is not always properly discontinuous. In this paper, we give a criterion for properly discontinuous actions, which generalizes our previous work [6] for an analogous problem in the continuous setting. Furthermore, we introduce the discontinuous dual t(H:G) of a subset H of G , ...
متن کاملHyperbolic groups admit proper affine isometric actions on l p - spaces Guoliang
Let X be a Banach space and Γ be a countable discrete group. An affine and isometric action α of Γ on X is said to be proper if limg→∞‖α(g)ξ‖ = ∞ for every ξ ∈ X. If Γ admits a proper isometric affine action on Hilbert space, then Γ is said to be of Haagerup property [9] or a-T-menable [12]. Bekka, Cherix and Valette proved that an amenable group admits a proper affine isometric action on Hilbe...
متن کاملClassifying Spaces of Subgroups of Profinite Groups
The set of all closed subgroups of a profinite carries a natural profinite topology. This space of subgroups can be classified up to homeomorphism in many cases, and tight bounds placed on its complexity as expressed by its scattered height.
